The nominees for this year's 2023 BBC Music Magazine Awards have been announced - with Delphian releases featuring in both Newcomer and Vocal categories

BBC Music Magazine writes: "It has been another memorable year of top-class recordings, from familiar artists performing much-loved repertoire to the up-and-coming stars of tomorrow dazzling with innovative programmes and incredible musicianship.

We’re delighted to present the nominations for the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2023, in association with Lark Music Insurance. The winners are up to you, so click on the different sections below and cast your votes.

Votingcloses at midnight on Tuesday 28 February, with the winners revealed at our Awards ceremony at King’s Place in London on Wednesday 19 April.

The Hermes Experiment

This powerful yet understated recital of modern and seventeenth-century works aims to revisit but also to re-balance the obsession of earlier music with female abandonment and lament.

The stories of women such as Dido and Ariadne have been told and retold throughout history. Mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston reconsiders the assumed helplessness of those often seen as being left behind by male adventure and success.

Castalian String Quartet

From the darkness of night emerges day, the cycle of nature tracing the journey of the soul. The finely calibrated emotions of Orlande de Lassus’s song La nuit froide et sombre, and of his near-contemporary John Dowland’s Come, heavy sleep, are made newly vivid in transcriptions by the Castalian String Quartet, framing a programme which exists both inside and beyond time.

Profound meditations on immortality and worldliness from Beethoven and Thomas Adès receive readings of extraordinary intensity, the Quartet’s burnished tone and astounding interconnectedness making this a debut that demands to be heard.
